I decided to put some Unicorn SPiT in my office, have you heard of it? My father-in-law went away for the winter … and I kicked him out of his desk. Shh … don’t tell him! I was kind and even boxed up all his stuff! (If this is where an emoji went … I would put the one that’s sideways, laughing … with the tears!)
My Very Own Work Space
The last time we added on to the store, we put in enough offices for everyone to have space as well as a large conference room. Fast forward a few years and the before mentioned “conference room” is now home to three desks and a conference table crame packed with my randomness (my brother-in-law and the boyfriend LOVE this, by the way!). This winter, when Eldon left for his yearly pilgrimage to the sunshine state, I decided that since he wasn’t there for a few months … I would just take over his space! And maybe even get my very own PHONE! It’s the small things, friends!
I know, it’s BEAUTIFUL, right?! Not so much. Ok, ok. We do work in a lumber yard, but still. I wanted something that I seriously enjoyed staring at all day! But, it is still a store full of men, who think too much “stuff” is ridiculous and remember I am still technically in the conference room. Going full out was out of the question so that basically gave me a few feet of wall space. A couple of years ago, we got in this really cool gel stain called Unicorn SPiT. It’s non-toxic and has vibrant colors. It works on a ton of different surfaces like wood, glass, metal, fabric, pottery, wicker, concrete, and laminate. Use indoors or outdoors and I knew I wanted to do SOMETHING with it.
I found some brackets under my desk that I purchased a few years ago and hadn’t done anything with (yeah, don’t tell the boyfriend about that either – because I buy random crap for a purpose!). Then, I used a stud finder to decide where I would attach them on the wall and hit studs, which gave me the length of my board (an “ish” length). After that, I grabbed a 1×12 board out of the scrap pile and cut it to a length I wanted — super easy. Wear your safety glasses!
Cheers to the Unicorn SPiT
I used Unicorn SPiT and a cheap brush to create wild colors on one side of the board. It was super easy, and with a damp shop towel, I faded the colors into each other. You can literally paint elaborate designs or do anything you want with this stain. The more water you add to it, the thinner and lighter it is. Super easy and forgiving … which is why I love it!
I wanted it to have a darker, more used look for my office, so I took a random can of stain I had in the cabinet and wallered it on over the Unicorn SPiT. This way it doesn’t look so bright and fresh.
FBF (Favorite Boyfriend) sanded and put multiple clear coats of poly on it for me (a random spray-on poly from the cabinet that we already had). You have to be careful and not use a water-based poly because the unicorn spit is a water-based stain, it will basically be like adding water to it. Once it was dry and cured, we were ready to go!
Unicorn SPiT finally on the wall
Let’s pause a minute and talk about WALLDOG screws (in stock at our store). They are my go-to when I am hanging all sorts of things because they have a ton of options and they just work really well. SO EASY to install and you can use them on sheetrock without an anchor. Seriously. My dream come true! Check each package for specific instructions and find the one that fits your job! (I love them!) Apparently, when I was using the drill and installing the shelf brackets, I wasn’t doing it correctly. About 45 seconds in, my brother-in-law wandered down the hall and said, “What in the hell are you doing?! Because it sounds TERRIBLE”. HA! Since he couldn’t stand to hear me strip a screw out, he took over, which was fantastic! A few minutes later and we had brackets on the way! BAM!
When I sit at my desk, the shelf is high enough on the wall that I stare at the bottom of it. So, to keep things exciting, I put the Unicorn SPiT on the bottom and kept the top the boring stained side that looks professional. I grabbed a few fun trinkets and at least made the space look more like ME instead of my awesome father-in-law. For my birthday a couple of weeks later, I even got my own phone (with my own extension number) at my new desk. With the crazy COVID-19 virus going around, I haven’t been there to use it … but it’s there waiting for me!
If you haven’t tried Unicorn SPiT, try it. It’s easy and FUN! Be sure to check out all of my favorite things!
